Communication: Broadcast/Digital Media Major (BA/BS)

The BA/BS in Broadcast/Digital Media degree is designed to develop the next generation of leaders by helping students develop the skills and experience needed to thrive as a broadcast/digital media professional. This degree will develop a broad range of competencies required of a broadcast/digital media leader with emphasis given to developing both studio/television and live sports production, content creation, radio production, and more.

DFW is a hotbed for broadcast/digital media production ranging from professional sports teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks, FC Dallas, Frisco Roughriders, Texas Rangers, and other sports-related organizations. DFW is also home to several television stations such as WFAA, CBS, NBC, and more. These are just a few of the locations that offer internships and job opportunities for Broadcast/Digital Media students.

Credit Hours Overview

As required for all Bachelor’s degrees, students must complete the following:

  • General Studies Courses (i.e., English, History, Mathematics)
  • Designated Courses in the Chosen Major
  • Electives*
    • Lower-Level Electives (1000-2000 level courses)
    • Upper-Level Electives (3000-4000 level courses)
  • 42 Hours of Upper-Level Courses must be completed as part of all bachelor’s degrees
  • Minimum Total Credit Hours Required: 120 Credit Hours**

*Courses chosen by the student that will count toward a bachelor's degree, but may not be directly related to the degree program being pursued.

headshot of Brendan Smith

Brendan Smith is in his fifth year as the Assistant Director of Athletics for External Relations. He also begins his eleventh season of broadcasting DBU Baseball and Basketball on the Patriot Broadcasting Network. Smith graduated from DBU in 2009 and began his career in sports broadcasting at 103.3 FM ESPN Dallas in August of 2009. During his time at ESPN, Smith hosted several shows and covered the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Dallas Stars. Smith also produced radio broadcasts for the Rangers and Mavericks before becoming the producer for the popular Ben & Skin Show with Ben Rogers and Jeff “Skin” Wade. In May of 2013, Smith made the transition to 105.3 the FAN to continue producing the Ben & Skin Show. During his time at The Fan, Smith also hosted a Friday night high school football show on the Texas Sports Network. Smith returned full-time to DBU in 2015 and was named the Assistant Director of Athletics for External Relations in December of 2017.

Kyle has served as a full-time ministry staff for over twenty years. For most of that time, Kyle has focused on areas of Communication, leading teams of creatives on church staff, but he has also served as Associate Pastor, Campus Pastor, and Online Campus Pastor. He received his Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University.

Kyle currently serves as Vice President for Communication at MEDIAlliance International, a small nonprofit that specializes in connecting and training Christian media leaders from all over the globe. He oversees communications, marketing, media, and donor relations. He also travels as a part of the training team to provide media training in other countries.

Bryan Bailey is the Director of Media at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. He joined the Prestonwood team in 2017 after serving at First Baptist Dallas as the Minister of Media for 6 years. 

Throughout the years, Bryan has developed a desire to train volunteers to operate technology at the highest levels of excellence. The training program he designed at First Baptist Dallas allowed a team of almost entirely volunteers to produce services on some of the most technologically advanced gear available, and he continues developing this program at Prestonwood.  Bryan’s passions are training volunteers and pushing technology limits in worship (as well as fishing).

Bryan lives in Frisco, TX with his wife, Jenni, son, Caden, two dogs, and a bunch of saltwater corals.

Wes has continuously served on a church media team as a volunteer or staff member since 1982. Wes served as Media Pastor at Lake Pointe Church in the Dallas area for 19 years, where he worked with an extensive staff and hundreds of media volunteers to produce 20+ live worship services each weekend at various campuses in the Dallas area and Online.

 Wes is relentless about building teams of volunteers who can serve in their areas of passion, with repeatable excellence, without getting burned out in the process. His book, Systematic Creativity, is available on Amazon.

 Wes earned his Ph.D. in Communication from Regent University and enjoys researching complex production team communication, the effects and effectiveness of online worship services, and pilot communication in the cockpit.

 Wes loves mission work, travel, and flying airplanes. Wes is also a multi-engine, instrument-rated, private pilot with over 2000 hours of flight experience.

Dr. Ron Harris began his broadcast career in 1966, and has worked professionally in radio, television, and church media, along with serving as a professor of communications at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Dallas Baptist University. He graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Radio/TV/Film and received his Master’s in Communication from Dallas Baptist University. Ron served in the United States Air Force as a radio and television production specialist, primarily in Athens, Greece.

Ron Harris served as a Minister of Media for over 12 years and was general manager of KCBI Radio in Dallas for 15 years. Dr. Harris has been a member of the National Religious Broadcasters since 1981, serving on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and as the elected Chairman for three years. Dr. Harris is receiving the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame award in March.

Ron Harris is the founder and president of MEDIAlliance International, a nonprofit ministry that helps Christian broadcasters around the world through training, mentoring, and encouragement for them as they share the Gospel and biblical truth in their own cultures. Dr. Harris travels extensively internationally, holding training seminars, teaching, and speaking at universities and churches. MEDIAlliance currently works with Christian media leaders and ministries from over 40 countries.

Ron Harris has served on numerous boards and advisory groups including being a past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dallas Baptist University. He was awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Dallas Baptist in 2004.

Dr. Harris and his wife Judy live in Arlington, Texas, and have four adult children and seven grandchildren. Ron and Judy are active members of First Baptist Church, Dallas.

Dave Muscari has spent 40-plus years working in media. He left broadcast television in 2020, exactly four decades from the day he started his career, however, he remains actively engaged in the industry.

Over the last 30 years, Dave worked at WFAA-TV in Dallas, where he was a vice president for nearly 20 years. During his career, he played pivotal leadership roles at various stations across the U.S., served as a chairman of the ABC-TV Marketing Advisory Board where he represented over 200 affiliates and was vice president of the Broadcast Education Association for several years.

 He helped WFAA launch Texas Cable News, a statewide network, and the nation’s first HDTV news and other broadcasts on a VHF signal. He was also tapped to serve in an advisory role on the NAB committee that guided American broadcast stations’ move from analog to digital. Over the years, Dave has been recognized for his creative work, honored with multiple local and regional Emmys, numerous PROMAX and BDA Awards, and a prestigious New York Film & Television Festival medallion.

 Today, Dave works as a consultant with broadcast stations. He also writes for a handful of clients including luxury real estate firms in Dallas and Atlanta, and magazines in Houston, Dallas, Denver, and other markets.
