If you need medical attention after normal business hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.), you may call the DBU Police line at 214-333-5555. The University is concerned about the health of its students and will provide first aid and emergency care as facilities permit. However, the University cannot assume responsibility for medical care, and parents and students must look to their personal physician in these matters.

It is recommended that each student identify a physician in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex that may serve as their primary care provider while in college. We highly encourage students and their families to identify this physician prior to arrival on campus. Insurance providers may have helpful information in selecting a doctor in this area. Once a physician has been selected, we encourage students and or family members to make contact with the local physician and provide any information necessary to establish care. Students and their families should maintain a copy of the contact information for this physician in the event that an appointment is necessary. The physician's name should also be on file with the Health Services Office.

The confidentiality of medical records will be maintained in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). The HIPPA privacy law generally prohibits the use and disclosure of health information without written permission from the patient. FERPA permits disclosure of such records to third parties under circumstances prescribed by law. The University FERPA policy is available for inspection and review in the Rights and Responsibilities section of the Student Handbook.

Students must acquire their own transportation for medical care. Students are encouraged to identify a local physician before they arrive on campus. The International Office offers transportation for international students to their appointments. Students requiring ambulance service to a local hospital are responsible for the expense.

Each student should obtain medical insurance through an agent of his or her choice. Student insurance is made available by the University at a minimal cost. Health insurance is required for all intercollegiate student athletes and resident students. Brochures describing the school health insurance plan are available from the insurance administrator in the Cashier's Office located on the lower level of the John G. Mahler Student Center. Questions regarding insurance requirements may be referred to the Cashier's Office at 214‑333‑5336.

Each student must schedule an appointment before coming to the Health Services Clinic.
