The organization was started in 1924. There are 900 active chapters in the States and abroad. There are 9,000 new members inducted every year. DBU established a chapter, Alpha Eta Xi, twenty years ago. There are currently 55 active chapters in Texas, including ACU, Baylor, Mary Hardin-Baylor, ETBU, Hardin-Simmons, HBU, Lubbock Christian, and Wayland Baptist. Other chapters include UNT, UTA, TCU, Texas Wesleyan, Texas Women's, UD, UT, Texas A&M, etc. The current faculty sponsors are Professor Beverly Powell and Dr. Jodi Grimes.

Membership Requirements

  • Open to all DBU students who meet the following requirements and pay the one-time Society Induction Fee ($45) and local membership fee ($5) in the DBU Marketplace.
  • Undergraduate Students: Have completed both college sophomore-level English courses (World Literature I and II) with a 3.0 GPA or better in English and 3.0 or better overall GPA. More than 45 total college credits.
  • Graduate Students: Must be enrolled in a graduate program in English or one of its specializations, completion of six semester hours of graduate work, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.3.
