Leading from Rest: Caring for Your Soul while Serving

Opening Session

Speaker: Dr. Barry Jones

In his keynote, beginning at the 18-minute mark in the recording, Dr. Barry Jones talked about what it means to be Christ-centered leaders, focused on others while still caring for their own soul. He pointed out the burdens placed on leaders, such as the weight of work itself, the weight of the mental and emotional bond, and the weight of spiritual battles, etc., and how leaders can bear the weight of leadership in healthy ways. He finished his message by explaining how leaders can determine what is theirs to steward and what is theirs to surrender, allowing God to take control and work in their lives.

Speaker: Dr. Barry Jones

After the DBU's Chapel Worship team finishes, Dr. Barry Jones begins, which starts at 32-minute mark in the recording, his sermon with an anecdote about his first online service in 2020. After, he dives into how God is constantly calling us into a deeper relationship of trust with Him. Dr. Jones explains that through hyper-awareness, grounded identity, and deliberate response, we can better live and lead with rest. He ends by emphasizing that learning not to rely on ourselves helps us live from a place of surrender to God.

During this luncheon panel, beginning at the 8-minute mark in the recording, Dr. Barry Jones and the panelists focused on the topics of leadership, mental and emotional health, and intelligence. They discussed the main calling for Christian leaders and the responsibilities placed on them, and expanded on the overwhelming tasks and burnout leaders may face, and how they can be properly addressed. Dr. Jones brought up topics about leaders nurturing their own soul while still cultivating future leaders and providing expert leadership to organizations. 

Final Session

Speaker: Dr. Barry Jones

In his message, which starts at the 14-minute mark in the recording, Dr. Barry Jones begins by asking the audience, "What's stirring in you?" He shares the symptoms of 'Soul Neglect', which include shame, apathy, isolation, and many more that can hurt our faith. Dr. Jones discusses why keeping the Sabbath holy is essential for the health of our faith.  He also describes the practice of the Sabbath as reminding ourselves that God is sovereign and we are not. To conclude, Dr. Jones gives a list of 'Soul Health' symptoms, and encourages the audience to live and lead from soul rest, emotional rest, and bodily rest.
