General Policy
We want all students to become confident with their own writing abilities; therefore, some services are not found in the UWC. The Writing Center is not an editing, correcting, or typing service. Students cannot drop off a paper to be corrected by a writing consultant. The author of the work must be present to discuss the methods needed to improve the piece and his or her overall writing ability.
The primary aim of the UWC staff is to help you become a better writer; therefore, we have outlined what you can and cannot expect to happen in the UWC.
We CAN Help You
1) generate ideas for your essays.
2) organize your paper.
3) identify and correct grammatical errors.
4) proofread, revise, and correct your own papers.
5) improve your writing style.
6) interpret an instructor's comments on graded papers and make suggestions on how to avoid specific problems.
We CANNOT
1) help you on the day the paper is due.
2) write for you.
3) tell you what to write.
4) mark on your paper.
5) proofread, revise, or correct your paper for you.
6) take responsibility for finding all of your mistakes.
7) estimate the grade you may earn.
8) help you with essay exams or tests.
9) discuss instructors or other students with you.
Guidelines and Recommendations
Thank you for understanding that we cannot compromise any of our guidelines simply because this consultation session is not in person.
We recommend that you have a basic knowledge of sentence structure if you choose to use the UWC’s fax or e-mail services. We also suggest that in order to use the UWC fax or e-mail services, you obtain a copy of Lynn Quitman Troyka’s Simon & Schuster Handbook for Writers published by Prentice Hall (the edition does not matter). This handbook is used in the UWC; communication will be clearer if we both are working from the same source.
It is our policy that if you are sending a paper up to ten pages in length, we will consider only the first five pages for grammar and will consider all pages for appropriate content and structure.
It's good to include your phone number so we can get in touch with you if there are problems with the email.
Please allow 72 work hours to receive our comments. We appreciate your patience.
When sending assignments through our fax or email consultation services, plesae include:
- the assignment sheet, course syllabus, or other document that outlines what your instructor expects from this assignment.
- the phone number where you can be reached.
- the fax number or e-mail address you want our correspondence sent to. DO NOT assume that it will automatically print out. Make sure you include it in your correspondence.
- please place the words "Consultation Request" in the subject line of your e-mail.
Responsibility
The UWC is in no way responsible for the grade you (the student) may receive on a paper or other written assignment. All comments made by the UWC and its staff should be considered as advice not authority.
