Asked Questions - Specific to DBU Online Students
Home > Online Programs > Online Students FAQs
- I
have registered for my first online course. Now what?
Students should set up their DBU student email address at
the same time of registration, or soon thereafter. A student
welcome email will arrive at the DBU address approximately
7-10 days before the start of the semester. This email will
encompass the website for online courses, your username, information
regarding the student orientation course, and other helpful
hints to succeed in online courses.
top
- I
have logged into the Blackboard website. Why can I not see
my course or syllabus?
Course links and syllabi will be available to students on
the first day of the semester at 12:01am. If you need to inquire
about a syllabus before the beginning of the semester, contact
the college department of the course to see if they have one
available to give to students.
top
- Will
my diploma note that I took my classes online rather than
in the classroom?
No. Diplomas earned by students who take online courses are
the same diplomas as earned by students taking courses on-campus.
There is no distinction made between the two delivery methods.
top
- Are
online courses harder/easier than on-campus courses?
Online courses are developed and taught by the same DBU professors
who teach them in the classrooms. Time management skills will
need to be utilized by all students. Each course provides
a schedule of what each week will entail, students should
follow that schedule for successful completion to occur.
top
- How
do I email with my professor? Other students in my class?
Each course has a section entitled Class Email. If you need
to send a message, click on Class Email, and choose the recipient's
name. The email will come directly to in-box in Blackboard.
You will receive all class email from your professor in your
own message box located under Class Email. Be sure to keep
checking your DBU student email address throughout the semester
as well. Important messages from Online Education and the
University will be delivered there.
top
- Can
I begin a course anytime?
All online courses at DBU follow a traditional schedule set
forth by the University. Semesters' range in length from five
to 16 weeks, based on the time of year it is. Each course
has its own schedule within the syllabus which must be followed
to ensure a good learning community. Students may work at
their own pace within each session as established by the schedule.
top
- How
is attendance counted in online courses?
Online courses do follow the University's attendance policy
of no more than 25% class time missed each semester. Professors
count attendance based on participation in discussion boards
each session, taking of exams, and the submission of assignments.
Check each individual course syllabus for specific instructions
from your professors.
top
- Is
there a fall and spring break like campus courses?
Yes! Online courses enjoy a fall break during the fall semester
and a spring break in the spring semester just like other
courses.
top
- What if my computer breaks
down while taking an online course?
Students are required to provide their own computer access
for online courses. If your computer breaks down and you live
in the DFW area, you are always welcome to come use the DBU
academic lab during operating hours. If not, please find a
computer at work, a friend or family members' house, or local
library that you can use in the meantime.
top
- I'm moving, who do I need
to contact to make sure DBU has my correct address?
Any type of address, phone number, or name change must be
made official with the university by contacting the Registrar's
office at 214-333-5334.
top
- I've taken all my classes
online. When it is time for me to graduate, am I welcome
to come to Dallas for Commencement ceremonies?
We welcome our online students to campus anytime you would
like to come visit. If you would like to come celebrate your
accomplishment of earning your degree, please contact your
academic advisor for more information regarding Commencement
exercises and what is expected of you to graduate from Dallas
Baptist University. You must fill out an application
to Graduate before registering for your last semester of classes.
top
- How do I view the items
missed, or correct answers on exams/quizzes taken online?
We leave the choice of viewing items such as correct answers,
or questions missed to each individual professor. You might
have a class in which the professor allows for you to view
all questions missed and their correct answers, then your
next class might only allow for the grade to be viewed. If
you have a question about an exam, contact your professor
for more information. Students view exams under the "check
grades" link in the course.
top
- Where do I go to view the
feedback my professor provides for assignments and exams?
When assignments are turned in via the assignment feature
in Blackboard, professors have the ability to provide feedback
to the individual student on each assignment submitted. If
your professor uses this tool, you may view their comments
by clicking on the grade as listed in the gradebook.
