The
Technical Services Department of the Library is responsible
for
acquiring and processing library materials to complement the
university’s curriculum.
ACQUIRING
- A faculty
member from each college will serve as Library
Liaison.
- The
Liaison receives purchase requests from faculty members
and
obtains signatory approval from his/her Dean. (For more
details, and
links to forms, click
here.)
- Signed
requests are submitted to the Acquisitions Librarian.
- Every
effort is made by the Acquisitions staff to satisfy faculty
requests. Out-of-print items or materials available only
through independent or specialty publishers may require
additional time to procure. Whenever possible, hardbound
copies are requested in order
to extend the circulation life of the item. Many factors
may extend the time necessary to complete an order.
PROCESSING
- Once
the item is received, it must be cataloged and processed
before
it can be checked out.
-
Cataloging is the act of entering a descriptive record
of the book or item into the Library’s database.
-
Processing involves labeling the item for shelf identification
and making other physical changes to the object.
- When
the item is ready to be placed on the shelves, the Liaison
will be notified, and he/she will notify the requesting
faculty member.
- The
online catalog may be consulted to determine when an item
is available and to confirm its location and call number.
