Andrea Jones Captures Two National Titles

Dallas Baptist University Junior Andrea Jones (Forney, Texas) won the 2004 National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship in both the Heptathlon and the 400-meter hurdles at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. Jones was also named Female Athlete of the Meet over this past weekend.

The Heptathlon consists of the 100-meter Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put and 200-meter dash on day one and Long Jump, Javelin and the 800-meter run on the second day. Jones scored a 4497 in the event, which was a meet record.

She also was placed second in the 100-meter hurdles and in the indoor season, Jones was the runner up in both the 55-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash.
In 2003, Jones won the NCCAA Indoor National Championship in the 55-meter Hurdles.

Other Patriot award winners included, Senior Dana Sneed (Grand Prairie, Texas), who placed second in both the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter dash and Sophomore Elena Weldon (Flower Mound, Texas) finished second in the High Jump, with a jump of 1.62 meters. Also Sophomore Laura Chancellor was runner-up in the Triple Jump with a leap of 10.88 meters.

Tarelton State Relays

On Thursday, April 1st the Patriot Men and Women’s Track Team competed in Stephenville at the Tarelton State Relays.

For the women, Katie Simpson placed 6th in the 1500m run with a time of 5:05.97 and Dana Sneed finished 5th overall in the 100m at 12.41.

Andrea Jones placed in the top ten in both the long jump (10th, 16’09”) and the 100m hurdles (5th 15.15). Laura Chancellor topped off the day with a 3rd place finish in the triple jump at 35’2”.

For the Men’s team Dan Kingsley finished 11th at 4:15.84 and Cory Welch 15th at 4:22.89 in the 1500m run. In the high jump Jamie Walker placed 5th with a jump of 6’2”.

This week’s top performance goes to Junior Richard Nassar, who ran a remarkable time of 57.56 in the 400m hurdles. This is Nassar’s best performance thus far in the season. The team will next compete at San Angelo University this weekend

DBU Competes at ACU

This past weekend the DBU men and women’s track team competed in Abilene at the Oliver Jackson Invitational.

Although they were shorthanded on Saturday, the Patriot women still competed very well. Dana Sneed finished 6th in the 100m dash with a season best time of 12.10 and 11th in the 400m run with a time of 1:02.69. Tricia Snider finished 3rd in the 800m run with a time of 2:26.51 and Katie Simpson also finished 3rd in the 1500m with a time of 5:01.02.

In the men’s 1500m run Dan Kingsley placed 4th overall with a time of 4:11.17 and Cory Welch placed 7th with a time of 4:25.34. Jamie Walker received 4th in the High Jump after clearing 6-2. In the long jump Jared York finished 10th overall with a top mark of 21’ and David Waggoner placed 14th with a top jump of 20’5’’.

The top performance of the week goes to Assistant Coach Eric Sienty who competed in the 400m dash unattached and placed 10th overall with an amazing time of 50.52. The Patriot teams are set to compete at the Tarelton State Relays this Thursday.

Indoor Championships

At the Indoor National Championship DBU had several school records that were broken this past weekend. Andrea Jones broke her own school record in the 55m hurdles by running a time of 8.57 seconds. Also setting two indoor records was Dana Sneed in the 55m dash and the 200m dash with a time of 7.35 in the 55m and a 26.29 in the 200m.

DBU had several athletes break their personal season best marks at the NCCAA Indoor National Championships. Katie Simpson bettered her personal record by 19 seconds in the 3000m run by running a 10:36. Tricia Snider ran a 2:24 and bettered her season best by 2 seconds. Also finishing strong were Daniel Kingsley and Cory Welch both representing DBU in the 3000m run..

“Overall the team did great this weekend. This was the best performance that DBU has ever had, since I have been part of the track and field program, Head Track Coach Denny Giles said. “We are now looking forward to the outdoor season.”
