2004 Season Preview

Two a day practices have ended and the team is preparing for the start of classes and the playing season next week. Our first scrimmage is Wednesday at 8:00pm here at DBU and the girls are very anxious to play!

Training camp went smoothly and the play of freshmen Laney Sumrall, Courtney Schneidau, and Beth Bradtmueller stood out among a group of very talented new players. Captains, Andrea Spillers and Michelle Magnotta also performed very well as our strong core of returning players is providing outstanding leadership to our young roster. Be sure to get out to watch this year's team compete. They have 13 home games in the regular season.

The women's program won the NCCAA Central Regional tournament last season. They are hoping to compete well in both the NCAA DII and the NCCAA again this season. Another NCCAA regional championship will send them to the national tournament in Kississimmee, Florida for the third time. Look for this year's team to field a competitive and dedicated team for every game.

The DBU Soccer Program Touches Lives in Reynosa, Mexico

On May 28, the DBU soccer program embarked on a short-term mission trip to Reynosa, Mexico. The eight-person team served at Big Heart Orphanage where they spent time with the children and did manual labor jobs. They also painted a small church in Reynosa and helped clear a vacant lot the orphanage obtained, with hopes of opening a school in the near future.

“The Big Heart Orphanage is owned and operated by Gator and Deanna Carter. This is the second year we served there, and I hope to make it an annual trip,” explained David Granniss, coach for the men and women’s soccer teams. “It is unbelievable to watch how loving and committed the Carters are. Their love for these children is contagious, and it has been a pleasure joining in their ministry.”

This was the fourth mission trip the soccer program has taken, and it is an example of the entire Athletic Department's commitment to discipling its athletes while also developing servant leaders, a key component in DBU’s mission statement. “The Athletic Department strives to be competitive in every sport, but it is also completely committed to developing the character and faith of every player,” said Granniss.
“You don't realize how much God can use you until you give Him the chance,” said Bradley Jones, a DBU soccer player. “Serving on this trip has shown me that I can make an impact for God and in turn God has blessed and encouraged me for going.”
