These six guys are high-character guys off the field which, combined with their talent, makes their ceiling unlimited when it comes to baseball. Our goal is to be one of the best programs in the country in the development of players and this class will give us a head start in that category because of their talent and work ethic.”
The Patriots, who finished the 2009 regular season with the 36th best RPI in the nation, open their 2010 campaign on February 19 in Arlington against Texas-Arlington. Sanchez played at DBU in 1999 and in 2006 was named the National League Batting Champion as he recorded a .344 batting average for the season.

Bigley Named 16th Annual Howard Green SABR Metroplex College Player of Year
|
|
1/28/2009
Evan Bigley, who paced Dallas Baptist to its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I baseball regionals, has been named 2008 Howard Green Metroplex Collegiate Player of the Year Award presented by the DFW Hall-Ruggles Chapter for Society of American Baseball Research.
He will be presented the award on Friday, Feb. 13, at the annual Dallas Baptist preseason banquet on the DBU campus.
The 16th annual recipient of this prestigious honor led coach Dan Heefner’s Patriots to 37-19 record while playing exemplary defense in centerfield. He was selected for the Rawlings Collegiate Gold Glove Award after not making an error in 56 starts and 149 fielding chances with six outfield assists for a 1.000 percentage.
Bigley also paced the Patriots in total games (tied, 56), at-bats (249), hits (83), RBI (58), doubles (20), and runs scored (55). He was one of three DBU standouts to be chosen in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft in the 10th round by the Minnesota Twins and completed both minor and instructional league play in ’08.
He also slammed 13 homers, had 146 total bases, a .586 slugging percentage and 13 stolen bases in 16 attempts. His overall play helped Dallas Baptist become the only Division I independent to make the 64-team NCAA field and to down such nationally-ranked opponents as Rice, Texas A&M, Oral Roberts, and Baylor during the season.
The Lancaster, Texas, resident was a three-year starter in the outfield for the Patriots with 32 career home runs and 165 RBI in 163 contests from 2006-08 and assisted the university in the major step from NCAA Division II to provisional Division I to full DI status in 2008.
Heefner, who was American Baseball Coaches Association Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2008, has nothing but praise for this stellar centerfielder.
"Evan did a great job for us in centerfield last year,” he noted, “and it is great to see him get rewarded for what he did day in and day out. He made every routine play as well as numerous highlight catches. The most impressive thing is that it was his first year playing center field and only his third in the outfield. Being named the best defensive centerfielder in all NCAA Division I baseball is a testament to his talent but also his attitude and work ethic to put in the work everyday to maximize his ability. We also are extremely proud of his honor as Howard Green SABR Metroplex Player of the Tear. Mr. Green was devoted to Dallas Baptist baseball for years, and Evan’s performance and award are true testimonies to Mr. Green’s memory."
Previous winners of the Howard Green SABR Metroplex College Baseball Player of the Year have been - Scott Malone, TCU, 1993; Jason Parsons, Dallas Baptist, 1994; Johnny Issom, Texas Wesleyan, 1995; Karl Chatman, Dallas Baptist, 1996; Brandon Harper, Dallas Baptist, 1997; Royce Huffman, TCU, 1998; Cody Sundbeck, Dallas Baptist, 1999; (co) Jon Browder, Dallas Baptist; Pat Hannon, Texas Wesleyan, 2000; Mike Hall, Texas Wesleyan, 2001; Terry Trofholz, TCU, 2002; Clayton Jerome, TCU, 2003; Hunter Pence, Texas-Arlington, 2004; Lance Broadway, TCU, 2005; Drew Holder, Dallas Baptist, 2006; Sam Demel, TCU, 2007.

Patriot Baseball Works with Habitat for Humanity
|
|
1/23/2009
The DBU Baseball Program has taken an active role in supporting the University’s mission of developing servant leaders through their participation in numerous volunteer and service projects throughout the Dallas/ Ft Worth community. The players and coaches have served the community by volunteering at the Special Olympics of Texas State Track and Field Meet, helping with Habitat for Humanity and by reaching out to children in the Dallas area as they partnered with "Our Hands His Love" to put on a free baseball clinic.
Most recently, the players had the opportunity to spend a day helping Habitat for Humanity construct a house in Ft. Worth after returning from Christmas vacation. The players were able to complete a great deal of work on the exterior of the house, including grading around the house, putting up siding, flashing, Tyvek paper, doors and the front porch.
Coach Heefner commented on the team’s desire to continue to serve when he said, “We consider it a great privilege to play a part in the university’s mission of developing servant leaders by serving in our surrounding community. It is something we will continue to do on a consistent basis. We are extremely blessed and it is easy to lose perspective as college athletes. Every time we serve, we have the opportunity to grow in humility as we put others needs ahead of our own. Growing in humility through serving others is one of the greatest lessons we want our players to learn as they go through our program.”

Heritage
High School , Aaron was Newcomer of the Year his sophomore year in the district and First Team All-District last year for Alan McDougal and the Panthers. Because of his work ethic, his makeup, and his competitiveness he has an opportunity to come in and be a big part of this program."

"We are very excited about these six players. They are very talented and should step in and contribute immediately. He added, "Coach Frieling and Wyckoff did an outstanding job of identifying players who have faith, character and talent - the foundation of our program.”
Heefner, named 2008 ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, saw the Patriots finish last season with the 29th best RPI in the nation and a 37-19 record. This will be the first of 37 home games slated for the team this year.
Austin Elkins, a switch-hitting middle infielder, plays for Coach Don English and the Coppell High School Cowboys. Elkins was also named 2nd Team All-State for 5A baseball.

In 2008, the Eagles finished the year as Regional Quarterfinalist with Johansen compiling a 3-4 record, a 3.34 ERA and 46 strikeouts, tops on the Eagle staff. Johansen was selected throughout the year for many honors, including a chance to play in the Texas Scout Association game and the Seattle Mariners Cup Championship Series in Seattle, Washington.
Duncan McAlpine catches and pitches for the 2008 District 6-4A Champion Birdville High School Hawks, coached by David Hatcher. Former DBU Patriot Baseball player, Ben Zobrist, experienced his first MLB postseason start in Game 1 of the 2008 MLB World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Zobrist had the opportunity to start in right field for the Tampa Bay Rays opening night at Tropicana Field in
Florida .
Zobrist has been a utility player for the Rays throughout the season helping them on the field as well as at the plate. He has given his team 12 home runs, and 30 RBIs while keeping a .253 batting average for the season.
Zobrist has earned his spot on the team this year for the Rays, and has been a part of their unbelievable season. "We are very proud of what Ben has accomplished since playing at DBU. Ben is a very familiar face around our program, he has come back every year in the off-season to work out and be a resource for our players. It is great to see his hard work pay off in not only making it to the major leagues, but excelling and starting in the World Series," Patriot Head Coach Dan Heefner said.
The Rays playoff run has included a 3-1 Divisional Series win against the Chicago White Sox, and a seven game American League Championship Series win against the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, Zobrist and the Rays were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in the World Series.
