DBU Prepares 3500 Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child

Dallas, TX – The Dallas Baptist University community joined together throughout the month of November to prepare 3,500 shoeboxes full of love and gifts for children around the world through Operation Christmas Child. DBU has partnered with the ministry for many years and serves as the relay center drop-off location for the surrounding community. Through this partnership, DBU and the additional relay centers in the area collected and shipped more than 40,000 boxes to children in war-torn and impoverished countries around the world.

DBU Holds December Commencement

Four hundred eighty-eight degrees were conferred during Dallas Baptist University’s Winter Commencement service held on December 14, 2012. Of the graduates, 264 received bachelor’s degrees, 220 received master’s degrees, and four received doctorates.

International Students Serve with Local Ministry for Fall Break

Dallas, TX – Fall break on a university campus is often a quiet week. Most students have traveled home to be with the family, but for some students, home is too far to go, which is why DBU’s International Office plans activities for international students throughout the week. Without school during the day, international students are given the opportunity to learn more about their new community and those around them.

Dallas, TX – Dr. Beverly Giltner, after 18 years serving as Dean of the DBU College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, has retired as dean but will continue to serve the University as a full-time professor of physics and computer science.

Dallas, TX – Dallas Baptist University hosted the annual Community Partners Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, July 12. Two partners were honored this year for their significant contribution to the service-learning program at DBU. Dallas, TX – DBU students are often taught about following Christ’s example of love and service. Recently a group of 21 students traveled to Atibaia, Brazil, for a week-long mission trip where they were able to learn how to be the hands and feet of Christ despite the language barrier.

Fraternity Brothers with a Heart for the Homeless

Dallas, TX – The Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance estimated that in 2011 there were 5,783 homeless people in Dallas County, many living in the downtown area less than 20 miles from Dallas Baptist University. Several fraternity brothers at DBU were moved by this statistic and decided that they would dedicate time each month as a fraternity to serve the needy population in their community. Since service is a key component of each Greek organization at DBU, the members of Pi Theta Tau made homeless ministry a central aspect of their organization.

DBU Holds May Commencement

Six hundred forty-five degrees were conferred during Dallas Baptist University’s May Commencement services held on Thursday and Friday, May 10-11. Of the graduates, 365 received bachelor’s degrees, 275 received master’s degrees, and five received doctorates.

Dallas, TX – Dallas Baptist University hosted the 24th Annual DBU-Oak Cliff Partnership Dinner on May 8, 2012, on the DBU campus. During the dinner, the 2012 Good Samaritan Awards presented to the DFW National Cemetery and Dr. Dan Griffin, pastor emeritus and minister of outreach at Cliff Temple Baptist Church.

Dallas, TX – Dallas Baptist University hosted the 24th Annual Decatur Baptist College Spring Reunion for alumni on Saturday, April 21. During the program, the class of 1962 was honored for their 50th Anniversary, the class of 1952 was recognized for their 60th Anniversary, Bryan Price was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, and DBU Professor Marsha Pool received the Honorary Alumna Award.

Dallas, TX – Dallas Baptist University has named Rebecca Brown the 2011-2012 Staff Member of the Year. She has been a member of the DBU staff for the past 20 years and currently serves as the director of international student services. Rebecca was recognized during the Staff Appreciation Luncheon held in the Great Hall of the John G. Mahler Student Center.

DBU Students Minister to Tornado Victims in Arlington

Dallas, TX – On April 3, nearly a dozen tornadoes ripped through North Texas. Neighborhoods in Arlington and Lancaster—just minutes away from Dallas Baptist University—were among the hardest hit. Thirteen area counties were eventually given state disaster declaration as they began to rebuild.

Dallas, TX – Dr. Judith Carrier, Founding President of Tarrant County College Southeast Campus in Arlington, was the guest speaker for Dallas Baptist University's biannual Business Luncheon and Seminar Training (BLAST) held on Tuesday, March 27. Although retired from TCC, Dr. Carrier currently serves as Vice Chair of the Fort Worth Corporation and is on the Board of Directors for numerous organizations, including the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Team Arlington, and the Fort Worth Public Library Foundation.

Dallas, TX – Dallas Baptist University has been named to the 2012 U.S. President’s Community Service Honor Roll for the sixth consecutive year. DBU received this honor in recognition of its efforts to instill a spirit of servant leadership in each of its students.

Dallas, TX – "Without any doubt, the power of God has no limits", Jose Henriquez shared with students at Dallas Baptist University during a chapel service on Monday, March 26. Henriquez was one of 33 Chilean miners trapped in a miner's shaft in Copiapo, Chile, for 69 days in 2010. He shared with those in attendance about God's provision during a time of waiting and praying for rescue.

Dallas, TX – Fundraising can be a major concern for college students when it comes to going on a mission trip. But Dallas Baptist University’s Baptist Student Ministry has found that with a little creative thinking a lot can be accomplished. Sixty-five members of the DBU family recently came together to raise over $7,000 for summer missions though a BSM-sponsored event called “Run with a Mission.”

Student Leaders Network at DBU

Dallas, TX – This past week, 267 college students and staff from across Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Mississippi gathered at Dallas Baptist University on January 26-28 for the annual Christian Association for Student Leaders (CASL) Conference. Students were selected from their respective universities based upon their leadership roles on campus. Attendees included students from DBU, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, Louisiana College, Mississippi College, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor.

DBU Students Serve Community on MLK Jr. Day
