Pre-Pharmacy Advisor
Dr. Jonathan Cooper
Biology Department Chair, Associate Professor of Biology
Dr. Jonathan Cooper is committed to guiding students in the study of biology as they seek to honor God through lives of service and academic excellence. In his role as Pre-Pharmacy Advisor, he works closely with students preparing for pharmacy school, offering mentorship and support as they navigate their academic path and prepare for future professional training. With a background in cancer biology, Dr. Cooper’s research has focused on lung and soft tissue cancers. He earned his Ph.D. from UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship. His work on cell signaling and therapeutic strategies has been published in respected journals including Cancer Research, Cancer Discovery, and Clinical Cancer Research.

Pre-Pharmacy FAQs
Pre-Pharmacy students at DBU typically choose the Biology major (BA or BS), which includes a Pre-Pharmacy concentration. The prerequisite courses required for admission to pharmacy school are embedded within this concentration. While pharmacy schools accept a variety of undergraduate majors, the Biology major with the Pre-Pharmacy concentration is specifically designed to align with pharmacy school requirements. Students are encouraged to meet early with their Pre-Pharmacy advisor to ensure they are following the appropriate academic path.
Through the Pre-Pharmacy preparation at Dallas Baptist University, students have the opportunity to gain practical experiences through both for credit and not for credit internship and observation experiences. These experiential learning opportunities are critical to the development of skills needed for pharmacy school and a career beyond.
Internships
- For internships, students have the opportunity to meet one on one with their advisor to discuss potential locations that play to a student’s interest. Through internships, students are able to gain firsthand experience with the support of learning alongside a Pharmacist prepare to train them in the knowledge they will use in the future.
TriBeta Honor Society
- Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a National Biological Honor Society. It is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological science and promoting scientific research. TriBeta alums are an excellent resource for our students. Many of our alumni have returned to speak to our students about their profession and serve as shadowing opportunities in their private practices.

Research Symposium
- The Dr. Herbert Robbins Undergraduate Research Symposium gives students a platform to present their scientific research and an opportunity to learn about new scientific discoveries and the importance of summer research programs.

The Pre-Pharmacy program is designed to equip students for a career seeking to help those who need medicinal care. While working on your undergraduate degree, you have the opportunity to be able to sit down with professors and advisors to discuss pharmacy school being an option for you and pray through whether this is something God is calling you to. Academic Support
- Dallas Students at DBU preparing for pharmacy school typically pursue the Biology major, which offers the necessary foundational coursework in chemistry, biology, and related disciplines. While pharmacy schools do not require a specific undergraduate major, the Biology major provides a strong academic foundation for most pharmacy programs. In addition to classroom instruction, students are mentored by faculty and the Pre-Pharmacy advisor to ensure they are meeting academic expectations and are well-prepared for graduate-level study.
Application Support
- Pharmacy schools evaluate applicants based on multiple factors beyond academics. As students progress through their undergraduate education, they are encouraged to focus on building the tools needed for a competitive application. DBU faculty and advisors offer guidance throughout the entire application process. Pharmacy school applications typically include the following components:
- Academic Record
- GRE Score (if required by the program)
- Resume
- Personal Statement
- Letters of Recommendation
- Interviews
Building a Resume
- Because many pharmacy programs emphasize real-world experience, students are encouraged to begin building their resumes early in their undergraduate studies. This may include work or volunteer experience in a pharmacy, shadowing pharmacists, research, or community service. Students will have the opportunity to meet with the Pre-Pharmacy advisor and DBU’s Career Services Office to identify meaningful opportunities and craft a professional resume that reflects both their academic preparation and relevant experiences.
Dallas Baptist University provides the unique experience of merging learning the tools and uses of science while also being immersed in a Christian environment. Students have the opportunity to pair their learning of the chemistry behind medicine with the ability to connect their faith to their profession. The Pre-Pharmacy program is designed to train students to meet the medicinal needs of others while growing in their faith.
