The Master of Arts in Professional Counseling (MAPC) prepares students for being able to apply
for licensure in the state of Texas, while primarily a program that leads to licensure as a Licensed
Professional Counselor (LPC), students can also meet the requirements for LMFT licensure as
well.
Requirements for LMFT Licensure
- Let your advisor know of your intent to become LMFT, and your advisor will help you
register for the COUN 6325 Marriage and Family Assessment course, which will be
offered once a year, as an alternative to the COUN 6315 Theological Perspectives to
Christian Counseling. - Complete the 60 hours MAPC coursework, including the 3 semesters of clinical
supervised counseling. It will be important when you are looking for a site for your
clinical experience that you find a site that will provide you with the required marriage
and family clients. - Your site supervisor does not have to be dually licensed as an LPC and LMFT for your
masters training clinical experience, but upon graduation and as a LPC-Associate and a
LMFT-Associate, it will be required that you are supervised by a LPC-Supervisor who is
dually licensed as also a LMFT-Supervisor, or you will be required to have two
supervisors, one for one license and one for the other. - During the 3 clinical semesters of COUN 6317 Counseling Practicum, COUN 6318
Counseling Internship I, and COUN 6319 Counseling Internship II, you will work with
your instructors and site supervisor to ensure that you obtain the required 75 hours of
direct marriage and family counseling hours, and document these hours clearly on your
written log forms and in Tevera, our online portal for storing data. These 75 hours are
part of your overall 280 direct hours required by CACREP and our program, it is not in
addition to the hours. - LMFT applicants must also pass the LMFT licensing exam. One possible study program
can be found at https://mftexam.com/ - Upon graduation, you will follow the directions on https://amftrb.org/your-examroadmap/ for applying for the exam, which includes submitting documents to BHEC on
the Online Licensing System (https://www.bhec.texas.gov/texas-state-board-ofexaminers-of-marriage-and-family-therapists/applying-for-a-license/index.html#mft-a). - Questions about the process can be directed to the BHEC board at
