A University Built on Prayer - Join the Tradition

When DBU Chancellor Dr. Gary Cook became DBU's president in 1988, prayer became the foundation of his leadership. Viewing himself as the chief operating officer and God as the chief executive officer, he sought divine guidance for the University's future. Inspired by Acts 12:4-17 in which early church members held an all-night intercessory prayer meeting to save Peter from being killed by King Herod, Dr. Cook initiated a dedicated prayer ministry. As Dr. Cook remembers, "The Lord did a miracle and saved Peter. I pleaded for a miracle."

This ministry included DBU faculty, staff, students, and 1,000 senior adult prayer partners. Pam Moore, a former aide to Corrie ten Boom, became the first director of intercessory prayer, organizing prayer requests and updates. A prayer room was later established in the Collins Learning Center, where volunteers interceded for the University and its global mission.

Kathy Knight, who led the ministry for a decade, emphasized that prayer was at the heart of DBU. Today, this cherished tradition continues, with modern technology connecting prayer partners worldwide and strengthening the DBU family through faith and intercession under the leadership of Kristi Coleman, DBU's Director of Prayer Ministry.

Kristi is eager to grow the prayer partner network to 2,000+ participants and invites you to join this vital ministry. By becoming a prayer partner, you will play a meaningful role in uplifting students, faculty, and staff through the power of prayer. At DBU, we firmly believe that prayer can transform lives, provide guidance, and strengthen our mission of offering Christ-centered higher education. Your prayers can make a lasting impact on the DBU community, and we would be honored to have you as part of this movement of faith and intercession.
