Beyond the Field: DBU Men’s Soccer Serves the Community in Honduras

Serving the community in Siguatepeque, Honduras, Dallas Baptist University Men's Soccer Team partnered with Serve Hope International as part of the Global Sports Mission Initiative from August 12–17. While building homes, delivering water filter systems, and hosting a soccer clinic, the team extended the love of God through their service and interactions with others.

As the student-athletes arrived and connected with Serve Hope International, a Christian nonprofit organization founded by DBU friend Matt McMahan, they were ready to invest in the community of Siguatepeque.

From sunrise to sunset, the team was engaged in various service projects, actively spreading the light of Christ in every moment.

After distributing water filter systems, moving piles of wood, and hammering nails to complete two homes, the student-athletes had the opportunity to celebrate alongside those they served. With each answered prayer, the team was able to bring encouragement and the reminder that they are seen and loved by the Lord to every family.

Taking to the field, the athletes hosted a soccer clinic for Serve Hope Football Club players, engaging the youth of the community as they gained advice and learned valuable skills from the DBU Patriots. The student-athletes also competed in four soccer matches against local and regional talent during their time in Honduras.

Before heading back to University Hill, the soccer team joined the local church in Siguatepeque, where they got to participate in worship and connect with the congregation.

Reflecting on the week, DBU's Director of Athletics Matt Duce says, "it was a week of tangible impact and genuine partnership, and I am grateful for the team's effort and heart throughout."

Brad Bankhead, DBU Men's Soccer Head Coach, highlights how formative the trip was for the team, with an emphasis on developing future husbands, fathers, and bosses, as they served the people of Honduras and Serve Hope International. "Servant leaders who love and care for other people are what we want coming out of the DBU Men's Soccer program," says Coach Bankhead.

As the team returns to campus for the start of the fall semester and upcoming soccer season, the impact of service and the memories they created in Honduras will remain with them throughout the 2026–27 season and into the next chapters of their lives.
