Winter Break Classes: Get Ahead and Graduate Sooner
Winter Break is quickly approaching. Finals are looming, Christmas parties are taking place, and bags are being packed to head home and spend a wonderful, long break with family and friends. But did you know you can use your winter break to take a class?
Some students find the opportunity to get ahead over break really exciting, especially when you consider that getting a class or two out of the way can gain you a couple of semesters over a couple of years. Winter break classes are such an easy and practical way to get 3 hours or more crossed off of your degree plan.
Winter Break Class Format
Classes available over winter break are offered in several formats: online, in-person, hybrids, or as a Travel Study. Most classes offered over Winter Break are basics or low-level major courses, meaning most of them are probably on your degree plan at some point. However, that doesn’t mean Juniors and Seniors can’t take part if you’ve already crossed off all of your basics. Be sure to check with your advisor about what classes are offered each year, because there are some higher-level courses that get offered over break as well.

Travel Study Courses
Besides online classes, winter break is a popular time for DBU to offer Travel Study courses. These are highly recommended if you have the chance! To learn about when these trips are happening and what classes you can take in conjunction with them, talk to your advisor. In the past, DBU has taken trips to Greece, Italy, Oxford, Germany, Washington D.C., and many more places you’d love to get on your passport. These are trips of a lifetime, and you get to earn credit while traveling!

A Year-Round Tradition
If you miss this winter break to take an extra class, don’t lose heart! Be in regular communication with your advisor about classes offered over breaks. They are offered over breaks routinely throughout the year, including spring, summer, and fall breaks. They are a fun and productive way to get one step closer to graduating.
Encouragement for the Break
At the end of the day, focus on using your Winter Break to glorify God. If that looks like being productive and taking a class or two, do it for His glory! However, if that looks like taking a break and truly resting over break, listen to the Holy Spirit and rest in Christ before doing anything else. Be faithful in what He has given you, like being a good student, and trust that He will handle the rest.
As we head towards winter break, Christmas, and the new year, remember this quote from C.T. Studd:
“Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
