GSOM July Commissional Corner: Where Are They Now? Luisa Angel and Amin Calvo

Commissional Corner

Luisa Angel and Amin Calvo graduated from the MAGL program in May 2022 and currently serve at Park Cities Baptist Church. Luisa works at the Vickery Herrera Center (VHC) as a coordinator. The VHC helps the community and refugees from the 10/40 window with food and clothes distribution and offers English, finance, and Bible classes. Amin serves as associate pastor and local missionary in church planting and community outreach.

Luisa came to know the Lord at 13 while at camp. The realization of how much God loved her drew her to Jesus. “There is no greater love than a Father who gave His only Son to save us,” she said. Amin trusted Jesus after his life was saved from a bullet to the head. God’s grace is what drew Amin to Jesus. He shared, “God’s grace is always in the lives of those who love God.”

Through their time in ministry, Luisa and Amin have learned the importance of keeping as close a relationship with God as with the leaders serving alongside them. As stated by Amin, “One of the greatest lessons is to love people, form teams, and not live the Christian life alone.”

Luisa and Amin are thankful for their time in the MAGL program at DBU. They describe the MAGL program as special because students acquire skills and abilities to train leaders who can then train leaders in any work environment. Their time in the MAGL program empowered them to lead and guide different races, cultures, and social classes with the gospel of Jesus Christ. They have since been a part of starting two churches.

Luisa and Amin offer the following advice to current MAGL students. Always lift up current needs and classes to the Lord. Make sure to find a local church to serve in, along with a group of brother and sister prayer warriors. Keep a journal to record the professor’s principles, experiences, and advice. Do the homework to impact the people being ministered to. Serve in an area related to the course of study. Finally, “Remember, graduation is not the final goal but the beginning of your ministry life. Relationships with others, your faithfulness in service or work, and your relationship with God will be most important before and after your graduation.”

There are many opportunities for God to use MAGL students and alumni in Luisa and Amin’s ministry. Park Cities Baptist Church currently has three locations and has a vision to expand the Kingdom of God in Dallas and around the world. Students and alumni can serve in a cross-cultural environment with over 9 different cultures. Spanish speakers can serve as teachers, preachers, evangelists, leaders of small groups, or leaders of children’s Bible study. Anyone interested in these opportunities can contact the MAGL office at (214) 333-5508 for Luisa or Amin’s contact information.
