Dallas, TX - More than 600 incoming and transfer students from Dallas Baptist University participated in service projects around the Metroplex on Friday, August 23. Participants in Student Welcome and Transition (SWAT) Week, volunteered at a variety of locations with projects ranging from landscaping to assembling backpacks filled with school supplies for a local church.

One group of approximately 25 spent the day at the Dogwood Canyon Audobon Center in Cedar Hill. The students paved trails and relocated boulders to help provide protection on the pathways.

Paige Harrelson, a new transfer student, shared "I am glad that DBU is spreading our reputation of being service-oriented, and through that, we are spreading Christ's love and showing how students serve even though it is really hard work. We want to serve them because Christ served us."

Another group volunteered at Mount Lebanon Baptist Encampment where they worked on outdoor cleaning projects and helping with camp repairs. New student Christian Rang was encouraged through working alongside his new classmates and serving a local community partner. "We have made some close bonds, especially today through service," he said.

The largest group of new DBU students, approximately 280 students, served with Mission Arlington at 15 apartment complexes across the city. Additional service locations included: Angel Wings, World Impact, Cornerstone Church of Dallas, Trinity River Audobon Center, C.C. Young, North Texas Food Bank, Mission Midlothian, Cliff Temple Baptist Church, and Wycliffe Bible Translators.

DBU's Center for Service-Learning, under the direction of Andrew Briscoe, coordinated the day of service. SWAT week activities concluded on Saturday before classes started at the university on Monday, August 26.
