Summer on the Hill: Welcoming New Patriots, Growing in Community

As the Texas heat intensifies, University Hill continues to thrive, not with the roar of a fall semester crowd but with the steady rhythm of orientation, community building, and summer work.

Throughout the month of June, New Patriot Orientation (NPO) welcomed the newest Patriots to the DBU family on campus. With wide eyes, hopeful hearts, and a few nervous smiles, incoming students and their families explored their new home on the Hill, guided by the joyful energy of student leaders, admissions counselors, and DBU faculty and staff. For many, it was the first step toward a transformational college journey.

From academic advising sessions and class registration to worship gatherings and ultimate frisbee games, NPO offered more than just logistics; it introduced a way of life rooted in calling, community, and Christ. Through each moment, students began to see that DBU is not just a university, it's a place to belong.

Parents and guests engaged in sessions designed to equip them in supporting their students' transition into college life, while students connected through games, small groups, and late-night laughs at the Union. Chapel gatherings, led by DBU Chapel Worship, became spiritual touchpoints for many, offering a glimpse into the rhythm of worship and reflection that defines life on the Hill.

"New Patriot Orientation is more than just preparing for classes," shared a member of the Admissions team. "It's about helping students feel known, welcomed, and excited about their future at DBU. We want every new Patriot to feel like they're already part of this community before the semester even begins."

A key part of the NPO experience was the welcoming presence of DBU Admissions counselors and staff, who guided incoming students through each step of their orientation journey. From answering questions to helping students register for classes and navigate campus life, their support helped create a warm, Christ-centered environment for new Patriots and their families.

"For me, NPO was a great experience and got me super excited for the fall semester. I can't wait to start school at DBU," said incoming freshman Jackson Davis.

At the close of Orientation, the new Patriots officially join the DBU Family by ringing DBU's Liberty Bell—a beloved tradition that marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives at DBU.

In addition to NPO, DBU's Pre-College Academy hosted the Summer Institute—an immersive opportunity for high school students to earn dual-credit while experiencing life as a DBU student. Participants lived in the residence halls, took classes taught by DBU professors, went on educational excursions, and engaged in student-life activities designed to introduce them to the vibrant campus community.

"The Summer Institute served as a catalyst for our students who desire a Christ-centered higher education," said Bobby Soto, Senior Director of Enrollment Partnerships. "Marked by intellectual curiosity and a heart for service, students were challenged academically and encouraged spiritually to make a Kingdom impact regardless of their calling."

Classrooms also remain active as summer courses continue both on campus and online. Many returning students are balancing their academic work with internships, jobs, or ministry opportunities, making the most of the season's flexibility. While the pace may differ from the fall or spring, DBU maintains a strong sense of connection. Professors remain accessible, and the supportive campus community continues to thrive, even in the quieter months.

The Patriot Café and DBU Coffeehouse remain open throughout the summer, providing students on campus with spaces to enjoy a meal, grab coffee, and connect in community. The Library continues to offer a quiet place for focused study, while the intramural fields stay active with pickup games, pickleball matches, and summer workouts. Beyond academics, student leaders and staff continue to pour into the vibrant summer student body through Bible studies, mentorship meetings, and prayer gatherings.

Whether it's a freshman experiencing DBU for the first time or a senior wrapping up credits before graduation, life on University Hill this summer is a reminder that growth doesn't pause with the school year. Instead, it continues in conversations, in classrooms, and in quiet moments of preparation.

And as the DBU leans toward the fall, a new chapter is already taking shape—one that begins with the stories unfolding right now.
