National Cathedral and Mount Vernon

Today we visited the National Cathedral and Mount Vernon. I was completely floored by the size and detail within the National Cathedral and marveled at how every part of the building had a deeper meaning designed to take any person entering the church away from worldly cares and desires, lifting their eyes to heaven. Upon hearing about the history of the building as well as experiencing a service there, I was very much moved that one of the first things George Washington wanted to build was a national palace of worship where any individual regardless of faith background could come together and worship God.

These same grand ideals are present in George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon. While the cathedral is an ornate expression of devotion, Mount Vernon reflects the simple, peaceful communion of God and nature.

At each of these spots, we took time to reflect on what makes a leader and one lesson I have now etched on my heart is that leadership is a process whereby we are truly never finished. We have all been marked for something great in our lives and in order to meet those challenges and callings, we must constantly be in preparation for that moment. The ending of my day yesterday was a perfect example of this. After going to many historical sights yesterday, a small group of us went down to see the National Mall at night. While walking around, surrounded by monuments in honor of extraordinary men that God used to do amazing works, we began to discuss what God had planned for us and all the ways that we might be prepared to meet those callings. Just like that, it started raining on us and while running around the beauty of our nation’s capital, God blessed us with insight and joy in an unforgettable moment.
