Finding Evidence of God’s Providence through History and Literature in Boston, Massachusetts

Since our bright and early departure on Saturday morning, our group of 24 has visited some of the most iconic and notable locations in our nation’s history. From Old North Church to Harvard University to Faneuil Hall, we’ve had the opportunity to view history and literature in a brand-new light, right where it was made.

On Sunday night, DBU alumni Dr. Joshua Dodderer spoke to our group about what daily life is like as a Christian Pediatric Resident Physician living in Boston. Throughout our trip, Dr. David Cook has talked about the concept of “mission drift.” Dr. Dodderer expounded on this idea by discussing the importance of remaining steadfast and rooted in your love for Christ so you may withstand the harsh, pluralistic world we live in.

I have been especially encouraged by the discussions we have had with Dr. Cook on the topic of how to avoid drifting away from our mission.

As we sat facing Dr. Cook, each of us immersed in the bustling sounds of Boston, he explained how to become an effective ambassador for Christ regardless of the location or field the Lord leads us to.

In addition to being biblically literate, it is difficult to share the gospel if your peers do not believe that you are excellent in your field, have strong ethical beliefs, and are experienced and unwavering in your faith. Then you are able to relationally evangelize to those around you.

I’m excited to continue our time together up north! Each lecture given by Dr. Cook and Dr. Jodi Grimes has been individually effective and exciting. While the nature of this trip is primarily academic, I have greatly enjoyed being challenged by the call we are given as Christians to know Jesus and make Him known here in Boston, back in Dallas, and wherever the Lord leads us.
