A Singular Savior

Today's Reading
Luke 2:12
On day 6, Luke provided exposition as to why Jesus was born in a stable and laid in a manger (Luke 2:7). He sought to explain the reason a King in the line of David would ever enter the world in such a lowly place.
In our verse today, the angel announces this birth not as means of explaining to the shepherds why Jesus is in a manger but instead as a sign to signify the uniqueness of Christ.
We have no way of knowing how many children were born in Bethlehem at that time or even on that day. Yet, we can be sure that there were none born in this way, wrapped in sheets of burial cloth and lying in a food trough used by animals. That checklist could only point them to one child—Jesus. We must never lose sight of the singular significance of Jesus.
Jesus—the Bright and Morning Star, the Lily of the Valley, the Prince of Peace, the Good Shepherd, the One Mediator, the Wonderful Counselor, the Bread of Life, the Son of God, the Lamb who was Slain—this Jesus is unique. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the only Savior of the world and the only path back to the Father.
When voices try to pull us away, may we listen as the shepherds did and seek out the only one born of a virgin, wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger. There is no other Messiah but Jesus.
Prayer
Father, I thank You for the birth of Your Son. Thank You that He is the only Messiah, the only revealer, and the only mediator between me and You. Today, please help me to rest assured that the one true path is the Jesus whom I love. Help me to grow in this confidence and help me to boldly point to Your Son as the way, the truth, and the life.
Please protect me from seeking other saviors in my life. I know that my heart can wander, and I can stray from the path. Too often I am enamored with obtaining possessions, influence, prosperity, or just peace and quiet. At those times, I allow these idols to become the child whom I search for in Bethlehem. Help me to hear the words of the angel and seek out the only one to whom I should bow the knee. Help me to seek out Your Son, and to rely upon Him alone as my Savior.
Amen.
