Hispanic Heritage Month

With a night of music, food, and friends, Dallas Baptist University’s Hispanic Student Union hosted Celebra La Cultura night to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Bringing students together for a bilingual worship night, the evening served to cultivate community in the presence of one God who unites all people and cultures.

From the food to the outfits to the music, every aspect of Celebra La Cultura was planned to represent different aspects of the Hispanic culture.

The Hispanic Student Union welcomed Doña Lula, who served tacos and conchas, a traditional Mexican sweet bread. Each guest was also encouraged to highlight their culture through their attire. Many cultures were represented in this way, including Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil.

Later, the students gathered for a time of worship, featuring songs in Spanish. As the DBU Patriots worshipped together, the moment went deeper than just honoring Hispanic Heritage Month. It reminded guests that God unites us all, and we can honor and glorify Him together through things like culture.

As Celebra La Cultura was created to invite the DBU Family together, the Hispanic Student Union hoped that it would solidify a sense of community between cultures on one campus.

For those that are far from home, Celebra La Cultura night provided a sense of belonging through familiar customs they would find in their homes and cultures. The Hispanic Student Union also hoped that those outside of the Hispanic community would feel invited to come and learn more about their culture during this celebration.

As Kamilah Ibarra, Hispanic Student Union President, looked around The Sellar Yard during this time of worship, she witnessed people coming together to glorify one God, despite barriers like language. "I looked and saw people surrendered, knees bowed and hands lifted," she shared. "It was a reminder that this was never about anything else other than the name of Jesus. A God not bound to one language, one culture, one anything."

Moving into the months ahead, the Hispanic Student Union hopes to continue uniting students across University Hill, connecting people from different cultures to worship one God together.
