Dallas Baptist University is proud to announce that Travis Varner, a student from Keller, Texas, has been selected as a 2025 Sumners Scholar and awarded a $40,000 scholarship by The Sumners Foundation of Irving, Texas.

"I am so grateful to be receiving this prestigious scholarship. I appreciate the Hatton Sumners organization for giving me this opportunity. My family has struggled to afford putting me and my two siblings through college. This scholarship will go a long way in alleviating the financial burden," said Travis.

Varner is one of only 36 undergraduate students nationwide to receive this distinguished scholarship, which is granted to individuals who demonstrate academic excellence, civic engagement, leadership potential, and a commitment to strengthening American democracy.

"The Sumners Scholarship program has been at the core of the Foundation’s mission since shortly after its founding in 1949," shared Scott Higginbotham, Chairman of the Board of the Sumners Foundation. "To be named a Sumners Scholar is a mark of distinction that lasts a lifetime. Our Scholars go on to make significant contributions to their communities and country, honoring the legacy of Congressman Hatton W. Sumners."

Beyond the financial award, Sumners Scholars gain access to unique opportunities that cultivate their civic and leadership skills. These include networking events with former members of Congress, participation in Braver Angels programming, attendance at the Texas Tribune Festival, and the chance to engage in funded internships that deepen their understanding of public service and policy.

"We are incredibly proud of Travis and all the effort he put into the application and interview process," said Wendy Morris, Director of Scholarships at DBU. "This is one of the most competitive scholarships in the country, and Travis represented DBU with excellence. After being named a finalist, he underwent an intensive interview process, and we were thrilled to hear of his selection."

Morris also highlighted the supportive role of past DBU Sumners Scholars, Luke Brooker and Grayson Goebel, who mentored Travis through the final stages of the process. "Their encouragement and guidance exemplify the Christ-centered community we strive to foster at DBU," she added.

Sumners Scholars join a legacy of influential alumni, including U.S. District Judge Fred Biery, former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht, President of the University of Texas at Arlington Dr. Jennifer Cowley, and others who have made a lasting impact in the fields of law, public service, business, and higher education.

As a Sumners Scholar, Varner now joins this distinguished group of leaders committed to shaping the future of our democracy.
