Dr. Timothy Van Treuren Speaks at Annual Herb Robbins Research Symposium
Dallas Baptist University hosted its annual Herb Robbins Research Symposium in the Great Hall on November 1 and 2. Dr. Robbins, a Piper Professor of the Year recipient, served as Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at DBU from 1979 until 1994.
"This annual event highlights the outstanding STEM education our students are receiving through the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics," says Dr. Dion Fleitas, Dean. The event was co-sponsored by the College and the Beta Beta Beta Biological Society and kicked off with a noon lecture in Rogers Theater on Friday and a dinner that same evening opening with a welcome from Dr. Fleitas and Dr. Curtis Lee, Chair of the biology department. The keynote speaker for this year's weekend symposium honoring the legacy of Dr. Robbins was Scientific Analyst at Bios Partners and DBU alumnus, Dr. Timothy Van Treuren, who spoke of the biblical mandate and value of responsible scientific research.
Among the papers presented this year included a comprehensive field study of White Rock Lake and White Rock Creek, research of the processes of Information Security at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, examination of advances in the cure of neurodegeneration, and many others. Samuel Cocauh Diaby, an environmental science major, presented a paper on his startup company FED, which picks up surplus food donations from businesses and delivers them to local non-profit shelters and charities. Through an app, donating companies can create a profile, subscribe for scheduled pick-ups and even receive tax savings - all to improve better stewardship of food resources while caring for the needy.
"Through every student presentation, including the keynote address by alumnus Dr. Tim Van Treuren," shares Dr. Fleitas, "DBU is indeed producing Christ-centered servant-leaders who will change the world through the disciplines of science, technology, and math."
