DBU REPORT 12 newest truest PATRIOTS! The With the excitement of opening the admissions acceptance letter to the very first week of fall classes, DBU welcomes each new member to the campus family, encouraging them every step of the way and igniting the start of what is to be a memorable, transformational journey as new college students and Patriots.

SUMMER 2023 13 Start of the journey PATRIOT PREVIEW

DBU REPORT 14 Throughout the summer, incoming students visited campus with their families for New Patriot Orientation (NPO) sessions to learn more about the University culture, meet future professors, hear from various administrators and staff leaders, and just get more acquainted with their new home on the Hill. Gaby, an incoming Business major with a focus in Entrepreneurship, said one of the initial reasons she found herself at DBU was because of the vital financial opportunities the University provides for its students. However, once she got to experience NPO, she became even more excited by the sense of community. Eryn, another incoming student and communication major, also expressed how the people she met during Orientation made her feel so welcome. Students also experienced their first taste of collegiate community through a variety of engaging activities designed to introduce them to new friends and even potential roommates. At the end of NPO, the newest and truest DBU Patriots officially became part of the Family with the ringing of DBU’s Liberty Bell to a celebratory burst of confetti, a beloved campus tradition and a memorable way to close out the DBU introduction and open the next chapters of full integration to life on the Hill.

SUMMER 2023 15 The moment it became official NPO

DBU REPORT 16 Several months later, in the blistering heat of August, students finally arrived on campus with their belongings for Move-In Day and SWAT (Student Welcome and Transition). Campus leaders and returning students offered a warm welcome to the 650 fresh faces set to embark on the unique journey of being a DBU student in learning, growth, and community life. SWAT We’re finally here

At one location, students packed 580 boxes and wrote uplifting messages to support mothers with unexpected pregnancies during their pivotal life phase. Another group of students dedicated their endeavors to constructing and refurbishing residences for underserved families. DBU REPORT 18

SUMMER 2023 19 At the end of a busy day, which included a moving footwashing ceremony within their small groups, students gathered for a Candlelighting service, a reflective time that bookends their DBU experience on Christ and encourages students to consider their calling to be salt and light in the world. The weekend closed out with more small group time, recreational SWAT corps team competitions, and a late night Block Party.

DBU REPORT 20 First Day and WELCOME WEEK

SUMMER 2023 21 After visiting different churches throughout DFW on Sunday, Monday morning came bright and early, and the campus was bustling with students walking to their first college classes, meeting for late morning worship at the first fall chapel service, and enjoying making more personal connections within their new DBU Family during Welcome Week. It was all just a foretaste for this incoming class of the years to come, of spiritual enrichment, relationship-building, service, and faithfilled learning – all with the goal of teaching students to receive the abundance of life with thanksgiving and offer it all up to the Lord with hearts and lives of worship.

DBU REPORT 22 NEWS&NOTES MIKE MYERS AND BEAUTIFUL FEET MINISTRIES Community Partner of the Year Mike Myers is Director and CoFounder of Beautiful Feet Ministries in Dallas, which provides the homeless with food, clothing, and discipleship. The ministry was honored this year at DBU’s annual Community Partnership Luncheon. In the early 1980s, a group of students from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary shared coffee, donuts, and the Gospel with some homeless men and women sleeping in the Fort Worth Water Gardens. Among these students was Mike Myers. Soon the homeless were brought to local churches for services. It was quickly realized that the homeless needed a church of their own, thus the beginning of Beautiful Feet Ministries. In 1985, a location was found on East Hattie Street to provide a church for the homeless in the area. Mike and the team renovated this facility and in 1986, Beautiful Feet Ministries was officially opened. Realizing discipleship was key to bringing men off the streets, the Sunshine House was opened in 1994. This discipleship program, held in a small home next to the main facility, focused on intense discipleship, accountability, and Bible studies for Men. In 2002, the dormitory known as the “Boot Camp” was renovated and opened. This enabled up to 75 volunteers to come from all over the US to serve the poor and needy and learn what it means to be a disciple maker of Jesus Christ. In 2018, The House of Glory, a women’s discipleship program opened its doors for up to 40 women to learn and grow in their faith in Jesus Christ. Today, Beautiful Feet has served over 135,000 meals to the homeless, and their facility is open 359 days a year. Within the past year, they have had 3,800 volunteers. Beautiful Feet continues to serve as a church in the inner city, holding daily worship services and serving two meals a day seven days a week. Showers and laundry services are also offered to the homeless who come each day. On Sundays, clothing is given to the needy. In addition to this, Beautiful Feet offers no-cost dental and medical clinics each week. Beautiful Feet’s Pastor, Director and Co-Founder, Mike Myers is a graduate of Mississippi State University in Pre-Veterinary Science and holds a Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mike and his wife, Sarah, are blessed with the joy of five children and six grandchildren. DBU students have served with Beautiful Feet since 2005, and Beautiful Feet is a consistent partner for SWAT service days and various service opportunities. Rev. Chris Simmons, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in South Dallas/Fair Park, spoke at the luncheon. Desi Henk, Assistant Vice President-Center for Career and Professional Development; Mike Myers, Director and CoFounder of Beautiful Feet Ministries; Dr. Adam C. Wright, DBU President

SUMMER 2023 23 COLLEGE OF EDUCATION RANKED “A” IN PREPARING FUTURE READING TEACHERS The undergraduate teacher preparation program at Dallas Baptist University has recently been recognized by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) for its rigorous preparation of future teachers in how to teach reading, earning an “A” grade in NCTQ’s new report. The program is among just 23% nationwide to earn an “A” from NCTQ for meeting standards set by literacy experts for coverage of the most effective methods of reading instruction—often called the “science of reading.” To earn an “A,” programs need to meet NCTQ’s targets for coverage of the five core components of scientifically based reading instruction—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—and not teach more than three instructional methods that are unsupported by the research on effective reading instruction. NCTQ evaluated 693 traditional undergraduate and graduate programs across the country, including 50 in Texas. Overall, just 112 programs earned an “A.” “The DBU Dorothy M. Bush College of Education’s (COE) initial certification team strives to ensure all elementary education students are fully prepared for P-12 students and the classroom environment in which they will serve,” said Dr. DeAnna Jenkins, Dean of the Dorothy M. Bush College of Education. “The Early Childhood through Grade 6 (EC-6) initial teacher candidates graduate with 21 hours based on the science of reading, and the initial certification team is very proud that NCTQ has recognized the efforts of the DBU COE’s faculty, staff, and students to pursue excellence in the area of reading.” With national data showing that more than one-third of fourth grade students—over 1.3 million children— cannot read at a basic level, DBU strives to be among the programs ensuring that future elementary teachers enter the classroom equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to help students become strong readers. “I believe God called me here. I love my job and love serving other people,” says Don Kabetzke, who has served as Director of Security at DBU since 2001. He was honored this year as the 2023 Staff Member of the Year for his decades of faithful leadership to ensure that the campus is a safe place for the thousands of students, faculty, staff, and guests who visit University Hill. A pastoral ministry graduate of Arlington Baptist College, Don served as a youth minister at Grand Avenue Baptist Church in DON KABETZKE 2023 STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR his hometown of Amarillo before returning to the DFW area in 1989. Before coming to DBU, he served in three area churches as an associate pastor and youth minister, as well as the first Director of Security at Parker College of Chiropractic. Don and his wife, Vira, have been married for 22 years. They have two grown sons, Ben and Danny, and a daughter, Dr. Shaida Khan. They have five grandchildren, with one on the way.

DBU REPORT 24 Jill Reeves, a long-time friend of the University, recently visited DBU and presented the University with additional items to add to the Lord Bernard Braine of Wheatley Collection, which is housed in Pilgrim Chapel. Lord Bernard Braine served as a member of the House of Parliament in the UK for five decades, beginning with his election in 1950. Throughout his amazing career in English politics, Lord Braine continued to fight for conservative causes as well as human rights around the world. He was well-loved in the House, and from 19871992 served as Father of the House, an honor reserved for the longest consecutively serving Member of Parliament. In 1992, he stepped down from his seat in the House of Commons and was given a life-time peerage as a member of the House of Lords. In 1988, he began a relationship with DBU, serving as Chair of the Board of Visitors and often lecturing on campus. After he passed away in 2000, Richard and Jill Reeves, long-time friends of Lord Braine, chose to provide DBU with his papers, speeches, and other memorabilia. No stranger to public life, Jill Reeves has served as a County Councilor of the Benfleet and Hadleigh divisions of Essex since 1985, serving on a variety of committees and panels. This spring, she was named Chairman of the Essex County Council, having previously served as Vice Chairman. “We are so grateful for the friendship of Jill and Richard Reeves,” explained DBU President Dr. Adam Wright, who recently had a chance to visit with the Reeveses while he and his wife, Candice, were in the UK. JILL REEVES ADDS TO LORD BERNARD BRAINE COLLECTION “They are such fine examples of servant leaders, constantly seeking ways to make their community better, and it is an extra blessing to have new items to place into the Lord Braine Collection.” DBU President Dr. Adam C. DBU REPORT 26 DBU’s Global Community recently hosted the Forum on International Education and Leadership from July 17-21. This event, similar to last year, showcased the global influence of DBU and its commitment to empowering and encouraging other faith-based schools and educators. The different activities organized during the forum provided a range of tools and resources that can be used both within and outside the classroom. The week-long itinerary was packed with a full and diverse schedule of conferences, local school visits, the opportunity to network and connect with others, and a plethora of plenary sessions led by both DBU faculty and guest lecturers. Other guest speakers who shared their expertise included administrators and faculty from Newman International Academy, McKinney Christian Academy, Association of Christian Schools International, and the Network of International Christian Schools. The variety of topics discussed revolved around the theme of values-based education and the road ahead for students in the current day and age. DBU faculty and administrators, along with other experts in the academic field, reviewed subjects like classroom management, DBU HOSTS FORUM ON INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP emotional and social advice for the younger generation, healthy conflict resolution, trends in the classroom, and the cultivation of leadership skills. As the title of the forum suggests, there was worldwide participation from almost 50 attendees, a significant attendance increase from last year that indicates growth of the forum. Countries that were represented this year included Ecuador, Columbia, Guatemala, Mexico, Curacao, Panama, Brazil, China, Mexico, and Nigeria. “This Forum continues to be a light for faith-based schools around the world,” commented Phil Armstrong, DBU’s new Director of The Global Community. “School leaders and teachers are returning to their schools this upcoming year with new resources, ideas, and encouragement to be a light in their community. There is no better way to start the year!” For more information on DBU’s Global Community, visit dbu.edu/international/ global-community.
