DBU REPORT 26 Dr. Gary Starnes Dr. David Fletcher Dr. David Naugle Dr. Gary B. Starnes passed away at the age of 78 on April 12, 2021. He began his teaching career at Dallas Baptist University in 1969, where he taught full-time for 43 years and directed the Bachelor of Career Arts (Adult Education) and Master of Liberal Arts degree programs, and served as Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Chair and Professor of History, and Professor Emritus. In 1989, he was chosen as Outstanding Professor of the Year. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sonja; daughter, Emily Kinsky and her husband, Ed; and their children, Josiah and Katie Grace; his brother, James and his wife, Cathy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service was held at Dallas Baptist University in Pilgrim Chapel on May 8, and memorial contributions were solicited for the Dr. Gary B. Starnes Endowed Scholarship Fund. Dr. David (Davey) Naugle passed away at the age of 68 on June 11, 2021. He was a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, having established, chaired, and taught in the department for nearly three decades. Dr. Naugle also introduced the campus chapter of the Paideia (formerly Pew) College Society to DBU and inaugurated weekly Friday Symposiums as a part of the Honors Program. His award-winning book Worldview: The History of a Concept has been translated into several languages. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Deemie Slade Naugle; stepdaughter Courtney Cuthbert and her husband, Jeremy; and a brother, Mark Stephen Naugle. A service in honor of Dr. Naugle’s life was held at Dallas Baptist University in Pilgrim Chapel on July 10. Donations were solicited for the David Naugle Endowed Scholarship Fund. Dr. David Lee Fletcher passed away at the age of 91 on July 28, 2021. He is survived by his second wife, Barbara Shell Fletcher, of six years and preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Winifred Fletcher, to whom he was married for 57 years. Dr. Fletcher was a Professor of Religion at DBU from 1969—2011, where he taught Old Testament, Spiritual Formation, Homiletics, World Religions, and many other courses. In 2010, he was named Professor Emeritus, and the following year, he was named an Honorary Alumnus. He is also survived by his sons, Stephen and Scott; daughter, Reba Parker; and six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Dallas Baptist University in Pilgrim Chapel on July 31. Donations were solicited for the David Fletcher Endowed Scholarship Fund.
