Gerry Burns: Finding His Future

"DBU has helped me become a better manager and a better leader." - Gerry Burns, DBU Alumni

"I could put in a full day's work as expected of me, get to class at the right time, and not have to spend hours away from my family or work."

Dallas Baptist University's Master of Arts in Management program was the right fit for Gerry Burns, Facilities Manager of the City of Frisco. With a family and full-time job, DBU North was a blessing for Gerry. "I could put in a full day's work as expected of me, get to class at the right time, and not have to spend hours away from my family or work," Gerry said. He didn't have to sacrifice the biggest parts of his life in order to obtain the degree he desired.

Not only was DBU convenient, but it was also good for his business. With a concentration in performance management, Gerry was able to put his degree to use in the real world – in the here and now. His professors challenged him to grow both academically and in his leadership. It was evident to Gerry that his professors were truly compassionate. "It's not just a job for them, it's a passion. They're interested in the personal lives of the students that are in their classes."

"It's not just a job for [DBU Professors], it's a passion. They're interested in the personal lives of the students that are in their classes."

As the Facilities Manager of the City of Frisco, Gerry has been able to apply the servant leadership skills he gained at DBU to his own department. He has enacted an initiative to establish more professionalism in his office, implementing the lessons he learned in class. His employees are being trained and certified in areas they would have never dreamed of because of Gerry's commitment and dedication to pour himself out for those whom he leads.
