DBU Faculty Release Luther on Leadership

Dallas, TX – The fall of 2017 saw a unique excitement and dialogue around Martin Luther and his legacy with the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Seven DBU faculty members and one alumnus joined together to enter into the conversation with a new publication entitled Luther on Leadership.

As a leader, Martin Luther shook the world. Yet, oddly enough, while a great deal has been written about his life, theology, and legacy, few authors have taken the time to examine his leadership characteristics. Luther on Leadership fills this gap by examining his life in light of modern leadership theories.

This work looks at Luther’s life from a variety of angles, demonstrating why he was such an effective leader. With chapters focusing on Luther as a Change Agent, Transformational Leader, Adaptive Leader, and more, this compilation helps the reader understand how Luther transformed the landscape of Europe. Examining not only his theological contributions, but also his contributions in fields such as law, politics, economics, and education, Luther on Leadership aims to give a holistic picture of Luther as a leader in many areas of life.

“In preparing to take a group of students to Germany for the 500 year anniversary of the Reformation, we realized that very little had been written on Luther’s influence as a leader,” shared Dr. David D. Cook, assistant professor of leadership at DBU and editor for the project.

“In writing this book, my colleagues and I hoped to fill that space in the literature. Our goal was to shine a spotlight not just on his theology, but how God used him in a mighty way as a leader in all areas of society. We hope this text will serve as a springboard for readers who want to gain a deeper understanding of Luther’s enormous footprint as a leader.”
