Tolkien (ENGL 4316/MALA 5346)
Research Presentation

The members of your research group will offer a 20-minute oral presentation over your broad topic in Tolkien studies, followed by a period of questions:
  • Tolkien and Roman Catholicism
  • Tolkien and Victorian/Edwardian Medievalism & Fantasy
  • Tolkien and Medieval Philology & Culture
  • Tolkien and the Middle Twentieth Century

The purpose of your presentation is to inform the class of your findings. It should not seek to present the details of your individual papers, but it should pool your research to offer an interesting and integrated overview of the area. Your presentation should include handouts, with visuals when applicable. You may use multimedia sources, including Powerpoint, but please have all these preloaded before class begins that day.

Each member should participate equally in the design of the presentation and have some role in the actual delivery. At the time of presentation, the group should turn in a written account of how the work was divided and shared, with all group members' signatures at the bottom. In the case of a dispute regarding the sharing of work, individual accounts will need to be submitted, and I will schedule a meeting with each group member to seek to resolve any disagreement. If I determine that a member or members has not done their fair share, a lower grade or no grade will be assigned to those in question.

Your presentation will be graded according to the following criteria:

General Informative Discussion
Variety and Depth of Observations
Complex Nature of Information
Effective Use of Resources
Effective Use of Background
Addresses Each Area
Appears Prepared
Work Equally Shared
Observes Time Limits
