This liquid "cocktail" of morphine (or heroin), cocaine, alcohol (and sometimes other central nervous system depressants), chloroform water, and flavoring, which probably takes its name from Brompton Hospital, was sometimes provided to patients suffering from pain associated with terminal illness.
