Edward Spann teaches courses in church music and aesthetics. Prior to his appointment at DBU in 1988, he previously served on the music faculties at Shorter College in Rome, Georgia and at Houston Baptist University. Prior to this he founded the Department of Sacred Music at the Faculdade (Seminary) Teological Batista de Sao Paulo in Brazil where he taught for nine years after teaching on the music faculty of Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. While in Brazil, Dr. Spann wrote Musica e Louvor (Music and Worship) for the extension department for training pastors wherever Portugese is spoken. The book is utilized world-wide.

Dr. Spann is also director of the University Ringers. He is also the author of numerous articles in such publications as the Church Musician, The Hymn, The Journal of the Southern Baptist Church Music Conference, Quarterly Review, Overtones, and Baptist History and Heritage. An active member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, he served a term on the national education committee for the AGEHR as well as on the board of the Greater Dallas Handbell Association. The University Ringers have toured throughout the southwestern United States as well as to Korea, Taiwan, Italy, Austria, and Germany. The ensemble was recognized as the AGEHR college handbell program of the year in 1995 and 2000. They have also recorded two CD’s. In addition, Spann has several handbell arrangements in print.

Dr. Spann attended Hardin-Simmons University and graduated from Ouachita Baptist University. He also holds three degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX and the Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. He has served in several church and associational positions in music and worship ministries.
