Three Patriots Taken in First Two Days of MLB Draft

Dallas Baptist University had three players drafted in the first two days of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9th and 10th, 2009.  Junior Victor Black from Amarillo, Texas, was chosen with the 49th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Junior Ryan Goins from Round Rock, Texas, was chosen in the 4th round with the 130th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays, and Senior Brandon Bantz from Mansfield, Texas, was chosen in the 30th round with the 893rd overall pick by the Seattle Mariners.
Black, who was the 17th selection in the supplemental first round, becomes the first ever Patriot player taken in the first round and becomes the highest drafted player in DBU Baseball history.  Brandon Harper held that mark after being drafted in the 1997 MLB draft in the fourth round by the Florida Marlins with the 126th overall pick.
Black finished his Junior year with the Patriots pitching to an overall record of 6-4 in 15 starts, striking out 99 batters in 88.2 total innings pitched.  He ended the season with an ERA of 4.16, while opposing hitters could only manage a .276 batting average against Black as he stood as the Patriots ace throughout their 2009 campaign.  Black has pitched three years for the Patriots and has put in 245.4 innings of work, while striking out 246 batters.
Goins’ Junior year ended with his most productive offensive season as a Patriot, crushing a team high 22 homeruns.  Goins also added 17 doubles on the season, finishing the year with a .371 batting average, 70 RBI, .765 slugging percentage, and .478 on-base percentage.  Goins was the Patriots' everyday shortstop, who played a vital role in the Patriots' success as he held down the middle infield for DBU.
Bantz finished his Senior year at DBU with 10 homeruns, 38 RBI, .557 slugging percentage, and a .399 on-base percentage.  He was a four-year starting catcher for the Patriots, while building on his offensive performance each year to put together his most productive season in 2009 as a Senior.  He led the Patriots on the defensive side as well, finishing the year with a .981 fielding percentage.
The Patriots finished the season with an overall record of 38-17, under direction from the DBU Coaching Staff, including Volunteer Assistant Coach, Brad Welker, Assistant Coach, Nate Frieling, Associate Head Coach, Travis Wyckoff, and Head Coach, Dan Heefner.
